Somewhere in The Oregonian newspaper morgue, in the early 1930s, is an edition of the newspaper with a special photograph in it. It shows a group of young sailors in town for Fleet Week, the picture taken in a bar, drinks held up, lots of grins One of those young sailors would turn out to be my father.
Dad told the story many times, and Portland was so friendly that he fell in love with Oregon. It's a major reason the family moved to Medford after our home in Pasadena was taken out to build a new freeway.
I'm not sure what happened to the photo but I still can picture it in my mind.
